Retaining Walls Create Beautiful, Curved Stairs/Walkway

This homeowner-occupied duplex needed improvements to access the walkout basement apartment. This property had a hill leading down to the walkout basement apartment that needed ease of access and maintenance.

A stairway/walkway from VERSA-LOK retaining wall block

The homeowners chose to add long-lasting beauty, value as well as measures of safety by installing a stacked staircase created with the VERSA-LOK segmental retaining wall system.

Villa Landscapes created a series of steps and landings out of VERSA-LOK retaining wall block and Willow Creek paving stones, using a running bond pattern with the pavers to visually guide people down the steps.

The landings allow for long, flat stretches of walkway to make it easier to get from one staircase to the next. Deeper treads allow for more walking space on the steps as well.

Flagstone steppers and natural rock mulch add a nice texture and contrast to the landing area of the stairway.

Outdoor Living Space Design Complements Home's Exterior Renovation

When it was time to update the exterior of this Minneapolis home with new stucco, windows and trim, the homeowners also wanted to add a backyard entertaining space as part of the project.

Backyard renovation project

The back yard was the perfect spot for a large patio for dining and a space for a movable fire pit. The back door leading to the back yard and detached garage was utilitarian and didn’t reflect the character of the newly refreshed exterior of their home.

Retaining wall block and pavers used to create steps

One-piece concrete steps were removed to create a VERSA-LOK pedestal stack staircase, making a stunning entrance to the back door of the home. One of Villa’s expert designers helped the homeowner select VERSA-LOK Standard Units in Bronze Blend with bullnose pavers in black for the step treads.

Willow Creek Cobblestone in Lakeshore Blend was used to create the fire pit area with a contrasting black border in Cobblestone to define the space.

A dream backyard

If there ever was a dream landscape, this might be it.

These homeowners in Rogers, Minn., needed a solution around their pool plus wanted defined areas for dining and relaxing. This project illustrates how our designers can combine various hardscape materials into a beautiful harmony.

Outdoor living area with pergola, firepit and pool. Chilton steppers were selected to highlight the pathways around the home, and Chilton stone was used for edging, along with large river rock, cedar mulch and plantings.

The dining area is further enhanced and shaded by a beautiful 18’ x 18’ fiberglass pergola that was manufactured in a custom color to match the home’s trim. Columns for the base of the pergola were constructed with VERSA-LOK Standard retaining wall units in Bronze Blend with a weathered texture.

For patio surfaces, Willow Creek Paving Stones Slatestone pavers in Bleu with a sandstone border look beautiful whether the pool is open or covered.

A cozy gathering spot uses VERSA-LOK retaining wall units, in the Bronze Blend color with a weathered texture, to create a curved couch that hugs a firepit. Mondovi stone provides bench seating and column caps on the Willow Creek Ledgestone seat walls at the corners of the pool.

A party-ready and family friendly patio

Hosting an event at your home is a sure motivator to get the backyard ready for guests.

This homeowner in Crystal, Minn., needed the job done in time for a daughter’s graduation party, and Villa Landscapes rose to the challenge.

Willow Creek Paving Stones Cobblestone Patio

The backyard area needed a makeover that was party-ready and family friendly with areas for dining and seating. This homeowner chose Willow Creek’s weathered Cobblestone pavers in Lakeshore Blend with a border course in a contrasting charcoal to create a sweeping, curving patio for entertaining plus a walkway to a storage shed. Cobblestone pavers can be installed in several configurations; the homeowner chose the four-unit pattern for its beautiful, random appearance.

There are two entrances to the back yard, and the homeowner wanted access to the inside of the home from both. One set of stairs was constructed using VERSA-LOK retaining wall Standard units in Charcoal Blend, and the other concrete steps were veneered with matching pavers. Bullnose treads in Charcoal Blend provide a beautiful and safe finish to the stairs.

This project is enhanced by a large, bubbling water feature made with basalt rock, surrounded by perennials, boulders and river rock. Curvilinear planting areas near the home look stunning with natural rock mulch, too. The solution creates the perfect setting for a graduation party and many celebrations to come.

Fire Pit and Patio Make Night Time the Right Time to be Outdoors

There's no better way to enjoy the outdoors late into the night and long into the fall than with a stunning, curving patio and fire pit.

This family will get years of use and enjoyment from this beautifully designed backyard gathering spot.

Patio with seat walls and fire pit

Villa designers used Willow Creek Cobblestone in Bronze Blend for the wide patio and placed a Willow Creek Ledgestone firepit kit in a matching color in the center. Curved seat walls were created with VERSA-LOK segmental retaining walls in matching Bronze Blend for a distinguished look.

Natural Fond du Lac flagstone steppers lead to this cozy spot for entertaining and relaxing around the fire. Landscaped, mulched areas for plants and boulders round out this bold, modern design.

New Family Room Addition is Paired with the Perfect Outdoor Living Space

When this Minneapolis family added an interior family room to their home, an outdoor room designed by Villa Landscapes, adjacent to the new addition, added the perfect finishing touch. Accessible by a sliding glass door, the spacious patio and fire table area was created using Willow Creek Cobblestone and Circlestone in Lakeshore Blend.

Willow Creek pavers in Charcoal Blend and Lakeshore Blend added beautiful definition to the edging and patio borders. Our designers created the perfect transition from indoor living to outdoor living for dining, entertaining and relaxing.

A Graceful Transition from Home to Poolside

This patio with seat wall planters created with VERSA-LOK Standard units in Charcoal Blend makes a graceful and functional transition from the back of the home to the sidewalk leading to the in-ground pool.

Patio and retaining wall around the pool

Villa Landscapes designers used Willow Creek Cobblestone paving stones in Charcoal Blend, matching Willow Creek Circlestone pavers for the circular patio area using. The contrasting border course of pavers around the perimeter and circular patio define and unify the outdoor living spaces.

VERSA-LOK retaining walls make beautiful seat walls, planters and retaining walls and can easily incorporate curves, corners, columns and other features without the need for special units. The Willow Creek pavers look great bordered by natural rock and an iron fence, too.

Front Entry Makeover has Curve Appeal

This front entry makeover is the envy of the neighborhood. Villa Landscapes made the most of the entrance to this home in St. Anthony Village by combining VERSA-LOK Weathered Standard retaining wall units with Willow Creek Cobblestone and Circlestone pavers, all in Harvest Blend, to create an eye-catching stairway and planters.

The curved walkway and staircase give the home great curb appeal and a graceful transition of the slope to the driveway. Planters created with VERSA-LOK retaining wall blocks add interest with curves, corners and stepped appearance as well as ample planting space for a bounty of plants and shrubs. Undercap low-voltage LED landscape lighting adds drama and ambience to the entire entrance in the evening hours.

The fanned stairs flanked by stepped retaining wall units make a welcoming entrance to this home. The homeowner with the help of a Villa designer chose a hardscape selection that complements the home's brick facade and stucco exterior as well.
